Quote Of The Month: When I was a kid in Indiana, we thought it would be fun to get a turkey a year ahead of time and feed it and so on for the following Thanksgiving.  But by the time Thanksgiving came around, we sort of thought of the turkey as a pet, so we ate the dog.  Only kidding.  It was the cat!  (David Letterman)

The Benefits Of Exercise
Ten Minute Legs, Bum And Tummy Work Out At Home

Winter is coming, this means staying inside trying to avoid the cold weather, holidays and all the yummy food, and most of all lack of exercise.  Many people think that they are going to gain weight in the winter because they cannot get outside and exercise.  WRONG!  All it takes is a few simple home workouts and 10 minutes.  You can even do these workouts while you watch your favorite TV show.

Tone up, Firm up and burn tummy fat with these simple home workouts:

  • Squats - Great for bum and legs (2 sets or 24)
Stand with feet shoulder width apart.  Lower yourself by bending your knees until they are at a right angle, then stand back up and repeat.

  • Lunges - Great for bum and legs (1 set of 15-24 per leg)
Standing straight place one foot forward and bend both knees until it they are at right angle.  Push back to a standing position.  *You can either continue doing the same side or you can alternate sides, just make sure to do the same amount of lunges on both sides.

  • Calf Rises - Great for legs and calves (2 sets of 15)
Standing flat footed, slowly raise yourself on to your tip toes and hold for 10 seconds, then slowly lower yourself back down.  Repeat.

  • Stomach Crunches – Great for flat stomachs (2 sets of 24)
Lie down on the ground, have your knees bent and hands behind your ears.  Raise your shoulders 3 inches off the floor and slowly lower back down.  Repeat.  *Do not tuck chin, and do not use hand to pull your neck.  If you do this you could strain your neck.

  • Obliques – Great for toning love handles (1 set of 24)
This is the same concept as above in the stomach crunches except there is a slight change.  Lie on the ground, have your knees bent and hands behind your ears.  Lift shoulders of the ground and curl your upper body diagonally across your chest, doing each side.  Repeat.  *Do not tuck chin, and do not use hand to pull your neck.  If you do this you could strain your neck.
If you are having trouble doing the amount of sets and reps given, please start at a level you are comfortable doing and work your way up.  You can also go above and beyond the amounts given, just don‘t push yourself!

Before starting any intense workout please consult your physician.

Fall Favorite Chili Cheese & Salsa Dip Ingredients

  • 1 can Hormel Chili with beans
  • 3/4 cup fresh pico de gallo or salsa (homemade salsa is good)
  • 1 8 oz pkg. cream cheese
  • 1 small can sliced black olives
  • Mexican Four Cheese shredded cheese
  • Scallions

In an 8 inch square or 9 inch round baking pan, spread the package of cream cheese.

Cover with the chili, then the salsa, top with shredded cheese (to your liking, I prefer alot of shredded cheese.)

Bake at 350 degrees until the cheese is melted, about 30 minutes.

Top with some sliced scallions and chopped black olive.  Serve warm with tortilla chips, your favorite style!

This recipe is great for a Sunday afternoon football get-together!

Do I Have The Flu Or A Cold?

The flu and the common cold have similar symptoms.  It can be difficult to tell the difference between them.

Your health care provider can give you a test within the first few days of your illness to determine whether or not you have the flu.

In general, the flu is worse than the common cold.

Symptoms such as fever, body aches, tiredness, and cough are more common and intense with the flu.

People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose.

What are the symptoms of the flu?

Flu symptoms include:
  • A 100oF or higher fever or feeling feverish (not everyone with the flu has a fever)

  • A cough and/or sore throat

  • A runny or stuffy nose

  • Headaches and/or body aches

  • Chills

  • Fatigue

  • Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea (most common in children)

When should I seek emergency medical attention?

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of the following:
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

  • Purple or blue discoloration of the lips

  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen

  • Sudden dizziness

  • Confusion

  • Severe or persistent vomiting

  • Seizures

  • Flu-like symptoms that improve but then return with fever and worse cough
